I just finished praying fajer and lay back in bed, trying to fall asleep…..when my cellphone rang.

It’s been a really long time since I’ve gotten a call in the early hours of the morning. I looked at the caller ID, to find that there was no number…just a “Call”. I was actually contemplating whether to pick up the phone or not – eventually I did.

Miles away, I heard the voice of a very good, old friend. He was breathing heavily….and painfully….so painfully that I could feel his agony.

He told me that he had leukemia.

A thought just ventured into my head while I was in my Intl. Business class. I remembered something I always wanted to do – to pick a person, or people on the street and follow them around, to their home, school, work, etc. – to experience a day in their life.

It reminds of this one provocative photographer – Diane Arbus – She took pictures of the most eccentric people, she went to their homes, and sometimes lived with them.

The profefssor in my Intl. Business class is hilariously and monotonously loud. You can literally hear her high-pitched vocals all the way at down the corridor at the entrance of the building. Osama and I actually had to change our seats to the other opposite side of where she stands lecturing. We can’t even sit in the back because even the projections she shows us are oddly blurred (and yes, we did make sure that it wasn’t our deteriorating eyesight).

And then, in my Info Systems for Managers class – I sit right at the front, literally the first row. The professor actually thinks that he’s so funny. He is – but only a fraction of the time.
For that reason, I could swear that he is probably a cancerian. If not, then maybe a Taurus.

Sushi Sushi Sushi Sushi

Today couldn’t be more hectic at work. Nevermind that. But my cousin and I haven’t seen each other in a while, so we decided to go out to a cafe and then dinner.

The cuppacino was lousy with milk fat at the bottom of my mug. And my cousin asked for hot chocolate that came in white – so she decided to go for a cuppacino instead. We ran into someone I knew. Our parking tickets were expiring 5 minutes before the free parking time – and so we decided to just risk it because we couldn’t be bothered to renew the last 5 minutes. And while we were contemplating about the parking issue, we bought DVD’s off this Chinese woman called Ling – surprisingly, she spoke very good english compared to most Chinese i’ve come across in my interesting lifetime. I bought 9 of the latest movies. Now I can watch movies in the comfort of my own bedroom….

Then we went to have Sushi. I actually have the tendency to make seafood haters love sushi. Don’t ask me how. Just come out with me for Sushi one night and then you’ll figure it out.
We had ordered a new special on the menu – Sushi sandwhich. It couldn’t have been better.
Our waiter was a cute little geeky smiley face who impressed me so much with the way he did his job – so I decided to compliment him to the manager (and ofcourse, to compliment the Sushi Sandwhich).

And when we did that – we ended up with a 10% priviledge card, two servings of Japanese tea each, and complimentary ice cream that is a must have: Green Tea and Red Mint!

I don’t think I’ve walked out of a restaurant any happier in such a long time.

So this is my recommendation:

Sumo (Sushi & Bento) is the place,
Sheikh Zayed Rd, Dubai Media City and Town Center is where, (although i’ve only been to the one at SZR)
Randy is the best waiter!

If you don’t want to go alone because you’ve never tried it and feel too intimidated to venture, just gimme a call!

Energize me!

It’s the World Cup craze…and I am so interested in it because of the adrenaline rush it gives you when the ball misses the post…..And, I am so put off by it because it’s becoming the obsessive talk of the town (at my scope), and the talk of the world (in the real scenario); its rather sounding like how people regularly chatter on about the silly traffic jams, or fatal driving in Dubai, or how hot the weather is – BOOOOORRIIIIIIING!

And while all this is happening, I haven’t had decent sleep in the past couple of weeks – Boulders of assignments (including those pathetic, good-for-nothing group researches) just bashing me into dirt.
I’ve been having too many nightmares about my boss at work and my car crashing (although I already crashed it once).

I do have to thank Helen Rubenstein for coming up with the most awesome Vitamin C rich face and eye creams that have helped me look like a doll, even after all those sleepless nights, black circles, dehydrated skin and bloodshot eyes.

I’ve noticed that my skinny knees are in painful shape. I hope i’m not turning into one of those people like IT geeks who sit at their computer for 28 straight hours a day staring at 1’s and 0’s, without moving a joint. I’m only saying this because I don’t do that.

But what i do is: sketch people in my classes. People and coffee cups and people. I heard this comment a few too many times: that I am in the WRONG place. And it got me thinking…..right….What the hell am i doing trying to get a post-graduate degree in INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS?! Where is that Art school that I grew up wishing for? I don’t know.

And even worse, I tend to note down every single word uttered or seen. Not for the sake of my geekiness, but rather so that I don’t lose ‘focus’. But in reality – I think that at least 40% of the time, my attention span abandons me. I always thought of it as unfair.

So know you can see where I’m headed. Right to the end of this Universe.

God bless.
